2023 Fall Tea – Amelia Bloomer
Society could certainly benefit from some changes, and Dexter and Amelia Bloomer were up to the challenge, tackling things from women’s rights to temperance to education. The Bloomers met and married in New York. It was there Amelia arranged the meeting of the two that would become the dynamic duo of women’s suffrage, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Katie Stanton. The Bloomers headed west to Ohio, then pushed on to the frontier town of Council Bluffs. The pair worked tirelessly for the things they believed important, and supported each other’s goals. This program will look at what brought this amazing couple to Council Bluffs and the work of Amelia during her years here. Amelia helped found the Iowa Woman Suffrage Association and served as its president in 1871. She was inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame in 1975 and had a marker recognizing her work dedicated in Council Bluffs in 2022.
